  1. salam 1 malaysia all off u viewing my group blog..
refer for this subtopic what the factor why malays student can't speak and improve language english as well. hmmmm....

this matter also having in my self too.. such as graduated from IPTA i awareness english nowadays is so important, when we are looking for job you need to able know how communicate when we going to interivew.

the first factor i would be discus here about many malays student ashamed to try speak in english. The shy feeling they had and fear to make mistake also not courage them speaking in English to their Malay friends and their lecturers.

What the best we could done to solve this problem is to put much time on speaking when they are in the English classroom. Not just one way communication as always practiced before where lecturer speak to his or her students but courage them to speak among themself. The lecturer could create some activities which their student can use English language to conduct the activities to prasticed especially malay students would'nt ashamed yet to speak in english. this is my first factor from me in this topic.
so anybody, please give any feedback for me and also group this blog so that we can to know very well the factor this matter.

  2. salam.
i do really agree with all the comments here.
and i just want to add something.
as i concern, english language is not our motherhood language and also not our daily language.we usually speak in bahasa melayu with our family, friends and also teachers.
even we have 'english speaking zone' in our college, but then we still speak in bahasa melayu.

    in addition,
students always though english language is not really important and hard to learn..
although we learn english start from our primary school, but we cannot really understand english as well.
as a result, we will feel bored to learn english.
many of student also learn english just for examination.

so,we have to put an effort to learn and speak in english as good as well..pratice make perfect..thank you~

  3. salam.. firstly i think it is majorly because of the surroundings, most of our friends are malays and we speak malay all the time. we afraid to make friends with chinese and indians an even if we make friends with them we still communicate in malay wiht the. second because even the lecturers themself teach us in malay, the slide is in english and they are suppose to teach in english but they tend to translate it. last one for the moment, we ourself doesnt read much english books. READ ENGLISH BOOKS! thank you~

  4. salam 1 malaysia from me...
What we have gone through of the school days, I have found there are a few elements can be highlighted why the students especially Malay cannot speak and write fairly good in English.
We can accept that the students can not speak well in English because their environment is Malay spoken.

Normally in National Schools they don’t have any friend from the other races such as Chinese and Indian whom they can try to practice to speak English. The only chance they can speak English is to their English Teachers or to the non-Malay teachers if any in the school.

However yet we can improve the English teaching by identified the best method to this type of students. The shy feeling they had and fear to make mistake also not courage them speaking in English to their Malay friends and their teachers. What the best we could done to solve this problem is to put much time on speaking when they are in the English classroom. Not just one way communication as always practiced before where teacher speak to his/her students but courage them to speak among themself.

The teacher could create some activities which their student can use English language to conduct the activities.
With the time table which contains one period per day for English subject we don’t see why they cannot speak fluent English by they come out after 11 years in schools if the stress of English speaking is given priority.

If we can provide them with very basic skill of English speaking and build a confident in his/herself surely they can practice the language to foreign tourist or maybe to Chinese or Indian who can speak in English. By this way they can develope their language skills and definitely they can speak English fluently.

The way we teach English in Malaysia should be different from the English be thaught in England or in America. We have the different environment from those countries so certainly we have to apply different approach in order to achieve the success in English teaching.

The second important beside speaking skill should be stressed in English is writing. As long as I remember the English teachers in schools never ask me to write a composition. Compare to Bahasa Malaysia subject I were asked do a lot of compositions. No wonder we good at Malay writing but worst at English writing.

By looking at their student work of compositions the teachers could monitor the skill of their students’ writing and then from it they could find the ways to improve their student writing.
Compare to speaking , writing doesn’t need much time done in the classroom. The teachers can ask their student do the composition at home and only give some comments what the mistake they had done when they back in the classroom.

Writing skill is become very important when the student got a job. Especially in the private companies or foreign companies, most of the letters, reports and documents should be written in English in order to be understood by others. The chance to get a job and promotion will be an advantage if the worker can speak and write English well.

  5. No extra school hours
PUTRAJAYA: The additional hours to be allotted to the teaching and learning of English will not involve extra school hours, Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said yesterday. Rather, the periods of some other subjects such as music would be shortened to accommodate the increase in English classes.
“This is to ensure that the teachers and students are not burdened,” Alimuddin said at a press conference on “Memartabatkan Bahasa Melayu, Memantapkan Bahasa Inggeris — New Deal for the Malaysian Education System” here.
At the Dewan Negara, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Puad Zarkashi said the government would spend RM5 billion in its effort to improve the teaching and learning of English in schools. Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced on Wednesday that Science and Mathematics in national schools would be taught in Bahasa Malaysia from 2012. With this decision, the government has opted to strengthen English by introducing additional hours for the subject. On the 13,000 English teachers and 600 retired teachers to be recruited, Alimuddin said they could apply to the ministry to serve on contract.
“Successful candidates will be asked to teach at schools near their homes. We are still discussing the age limit.” The recruitment of 1,000 English teachers from overseas would depend on ongoing talks with Australia, New Zealand, India and the United Kingdom, he said.
On textbooks for students who have to switch to studying Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Malaysia, he said the ministry might print them in both languages. Puad, replying to Senator Datuk Samsiah Samsudin during Question Time, said several education modules would be introduced to assist teachers and students in learning the English language. This would include modules on writing, English oral and listening skills, and grammar.
“We will ensure that English proficiency means that one can not only speak the language, but also use it correctly.” Later in the lobby, Puad said the government would save RM40 million a year from 2012 when the teaching of Mathematics and Science is carried out in Bahasa Malaysia.
He said this was the sum saved from subject incentive payments (called BISP) to teachers who currently teach the two subjects in English,.
The allowance is to allow the teachers involved to buy reference books or take tuition to improve their command of the English language. Puad also said the decision to stop incentive payments will affect 61,040 teachers teaching Mathematics in primary schools and 26,389 teachers in secondary schools. It will also affect 46,946 Science teachers in primary schools and 25,781 in secondary schools.
